Growing crystals for the class
Growing crystals is an excellent project for fourth grade students because it allows them to slowly be introduced to the world of science. The goal with this particular 4th grade science project is going to be growing crystals in the form of a garden. When I say garden, I simply mean a conglomeration of crystals clustered together.
What you need to begin the project
In order for you and your students to get started creating a crystal garden, you’re going to need to have a saturated solution. If you are worried about what a saturated solution is, don’t be, it is simply a solution where no more salute particles can be mixed in. No more particles will be able to be mixed in once it has reached a particular saturation stage.
Getting started
In order for you to get started creating a crystal garden for your fourth grade class simply make a saturated solution of water. All you need to do then is add a salute to the water such as salt, sugar, or alum. You will need to make sure the solution is completely saturated for the best results.
All you would need to do now is stir the solution very well before heating it lightly. You want the solution to dissolve properly. Once you have done this you will need to poor your saturated solution on a substrate. Cover the entire area with a paper towel in order to avoid dust and evaporation problems.
What to do next to complete the project
All you have to do to complete this fourth grade science project is to leave the setup undisturbed for a few hours. After a few hours you should have a nice set of crystals created by you and your fourth grade class. You can decide to use another substance to make crystals as well, such as sugar.
You want to use 4th grade science projects that are going to be simple and easy for your class to understand. 4th grade students can be quite tough to impress, and as a teacher you want something that is going to engage them and pique their curiosity.
Creating a crystal garden for them is one of the best ways to do this. Not only is it something that will pique their curiosity, but it is something they will want to create on their own away from school. Not to mention the fact that the crystal garden is quite an attractive thing.
